2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid
2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
As Hyundai rolls out its all new, second generation 2016 Sonata Hybrid it’s now joined by the company’s first plug-in hybrid. With a class-leading range of up to 24 miles on electric power alone, the Sonata PHEV gives Sonata shoppers yet another choice in efficient motoring. In electric mode, this Sonata is forecast to deliver 93 MPGe – the miles per gallon equivalent for electric vehicles. But unlike a pure electric, the Sonata PHEV provides the range assurance of a traditional hybrid by pairing a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a 50kW electric motor. When operating in this mode, mileage is expected to be 40mpg in combined driving.

Total system output is 202 horsepower. As it pertains to recharging the lithium-ion battery, a 240v Level II charger will do it in less than 3 hours while the standard household outlet takes less than 9 hours. The Blue Link smartphone app allows owners to perform a host of remote vehicle functions including scheduling charging – important to those who live where electric rates vary.
A host of available equipment can raise the Sonata PHEV to luxury levels including a bevy of advanced safety features, hands-free Smart Trunk, driver memory seat, heated steering wheel, LED interior lighting, ventilated front seats, and Smart Cruise Control with full stop capability.
To distinguish the PHEV, there are 4 exclusive paint options and available Blue Pearl leather seats. Initially available in a handful of Green states, the Sonata PHEV is eligible for various tax credits.
