2017 AUDI A4 allroad FIRST LOOK
2017 AUDI A4 allroad FIRST LOOK BY AUTO CRITIC STEVE HAMMES
Following the recent debut of the next generation A4 sedan is its brawnier, wagon-styled brother – the all-new 2017 A4 allroad. With an added 1.3” of ground clearance achieved through a taller suspension and higher profile tires, the allroad combines the versatility of a wagon with enhanced off-road prowess.
It utilizes a new take on the brand’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system with what Audi calls ultra technology. Aimed at increasing fuel efficiency, the allroad operates in front-wheel drive until the driving situation calls for 4-wheel drive, such as during rapid acceleration or when the front wheels are standing on snow. Otherwise, by decoupling the rear axle when the sailing is smooth, the allroad can save gas allowing it to achieve an EPA rated 25mpg in combined driving on premium…that’s 3mpg less than the sedan which uses the same powertrain.
Pairing a 2.0-liter turbo-4 with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the allroad allows the driver to select from 5 drive-select modes, affecting quattro, engine, transmission and steering, one of which is a unique offroad profile.
A redesigned 5-link front suspension incorporates new adaptive dampers increasing ride comfort with the ability to adjust firmness for dynamic driving on curvy roads. Rated at 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, the allroad can run to 60mph in 5.9 seconds.
Available in Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige trims with the latest Audi virtual cockpit and connectivity technology, pricing starts at $44,000. With enhanced underbody protection, wheel arches with cladding, roof rails and hill decent control, the new A4 allroad is ready for any driving situation while preserving an Audi level of luxury and refinement.
