2018 Genesis G80 Sport First Look
2018 Genesis G80 Sport First Look by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
The Genesis brand’s entry-level large sedan is the G80, formerly the Hyundai Genesis. Since its redesign a few years ago, the G80 has been available with V6 or V8 power in rear- or all-wheel drive.
But for the 2018 model year, Genesis introduces the new G80 Sport, a bolder take with more distinctive styling and a new engine that first appeared in the flagship G90 sedan; the 3.3T.
This twin-turbo V6 produces 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque and comes matched to the brand’s second generation 8-speed automatic transmission with a sporty rev-matching feature for expertly executed downshifts. Genesis has exclusively fitted the new Sport model with continuous damping control for more advanced vehicle dynamics and ride compliance.
H-TRAC all-wheel drive models include a dual-sport mode allowing for a higher degree of torque distribution to the rear wheels. The tire/wheel package is exclusive too, with staggered width 19” rubber mounted to alloys with a dark finish masking larger discs fed by cooling ducts for confident stopping power. No matter the drive configuration, gas mileage is rated at 20mpg in combined driving on recommended premium.
A number of distinctive visual enhancements imbue the G80 Sport with a heightened sense of athleticism with a dark chrome front grille, copper accents, a lower rocker panel, smoke-colored lighting and quad exhaust with a lower diffuser.
Inside, there are sport seats with additional torso and thigh bolstering, a thick sport-design steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, a suede headliner, sport pedals and a copper Genesis clock.
The G80 Sport also comes well equipped with luxury convenience features, advanced technology and first-class amenities for all passengers.
Pricing starts at $56,225 and includes exclusive ownership perks from valet service appointments to complimentary maintenance for 3 years or 36k miles and much more.
