2013 Mazda CX-9
Ever since its launch in 2007, the Mazda CX-9 has been one of my favorite 3-row family haulers. It uses its space particularly well while still letting the driver have plenty of fun. And for 2013, Mazda’s keeping it fresh by giving it their Kodo look.
In a technology-driven auto biz, 6 years is a long time so it’s more important than ever for companies to nurture their models with that new to market feel. If done right, like here with the CX-9, a vehicle can age gracefully. KODO, or Soul of Motion, is Mazda’s latest design language intended to capture the fluidity of movement – while standing still. To accomplish this and present the CX-9 as unmistakably Mazda, there are new headlamps housing attractive Xenon lights, a more aggressive five-point grille, a redesigned bumper with round fog lights and these edgy, satin chrome finish 20” wheels. The rear features a new bumper, taillights and round exhaust outlets.
At 16mpg city/22mpg highway, the 3.7-liter V6 has numbers that don’t quite match those of the newer Hyundai Santa Fe. Yet, it’s a strong engine with 273 horsepower giving the CX-9 plenty of zoom-zoom.
Though it doesn’t distinguish itself as much as it did when it first arrived, the CX-9 still possesses that trademark Mazda goodness in its drive, letting you know there’s a sports car maker behind this operation. You can order it in front-drive or like this, with a torque-split all-wheel drive system. All come with a 6-speed sport automatic transmission.
One of the CX-9’s best attributes has always been its very spacious and easy to access third row.
Its size is a plus, affording personal space to each of the 7 seating positions. The seats also conveniently configure in a number of ways, both sliding and folding affording maximum versatility. There’s also a handy storage area under the rear floor.
As part of the $2,400 GT Tech Package, you get this new TomTom-based navigation system with advanced lane guidance and real-time traffic.
At only 5.8” the screen is small by today’s standards, but features like HD radio and Pandora keep it up-to-date.
Elsewhere, this AWD Grand Touring model keeps the amenities list high despite its somewhat dated layout. All told, the CX-9 with its sharp looks, entertaining drivability, and high comfort and convenience levels remains a true player in the segment. Base price of this top-trim model is $37,170 while my optioned tester comes in at $39,755.
