2017 NISSAN SENTRA SR TURBO FIRST LOOK
2017 NISSAN SENTRA SR TURBO FIRST LOOK BY AUTO CRITIC STEVE HAMMES
Joining the Sentra lineup for 2017 is a new turbo model ratcheting up the fun factor for Nissan’s small, midsize sedan.
Based upon the Sentra SR grade level and slotted just below the range-topping SL, the Sentra SR Turbo features a new 188-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo engine – a 50% increase versus the standard 1.8-liter motor and is available with the choice of a 6-speed manual or an Xtronic CVT with manual mode, both specifically tuned for the turbo.
Accompanying the added power is a revised suspension and steering, reinforced body and larger front brakes along with sport exterior and interior treatments. With 64 more horsepower and 52 more pound-feet of torque, the Sentra SR Turbo benefits from stiffer front springs and significantly increased damping front and rear to best suit the 17 wheels and ContiProContact tires. Increased cowl thickness strengthens the body and reprogrammed Electric Power Steering lends to enhanced feedback. Additionally, a feature called Active Understeer Control which helps prevent plowing through turns is optimized here.
Nissan says the SR Turbo provides “an improved acceleration feeling from standing starts and highway passing, along with improved handling response and enhanced ride comfort.” There is a sport interior trim, sport cloth seats and heated front seats while the optional Premium Package adds leather, a Bose audio system, Navigation and Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Pricing starts at $22,855 including destination regardless of transmission choice, though the automatic returns better mileage by 1mpg, at 29mpg in combined driving.
