2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes

Though European luxury SUVs are plentiful, finding a full-fledged 7-seater can be challenging. Enter the all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Formerly known as the GL, Mercedes says the added ‘S’ confirms its position as the “S-Class among SUVs.”  Dimensionally unchanged, the GLS improves upon its predecessor in efficiency, as well as offering additional DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, an improved air suspension system with enhanced damping, a 9-speed automatic transmission, state of the art assistance systems and the latest generation of telematics, including internet access and remote start capability.

The new 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLSA new exterior design and equipment lines include chrome details, while an available Sport package and designo individualization options add exclusivity.  Maximum safety for 7 passengers is a key aspect of the GLS, with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist, and ATTENTION ASSIST standard across the board.

The model line and engine offerings remain familiar: starting with the diesel-powered GLS350 followed by 3 gas variants – the GLS450, GLS550 and the AMG GLS63. All biturbo engines provide better performance including the 362 horsepower 3.0-liter V6, the 449 horsepower 4.7-liter V8 and the 577 horsepower 5.5-liter V8.  4Matic all-wheel drive is standard while an optional off-road package takes advantage of the low range gearbox and center differential lock for more serious off-road performance.   Towing is maxed at 7,500 pounds.

Pricing starts at about $68,000 while the mighty AMG GLS63, with its 4.5 second 0-to-60mph time carries an MSRP of near $125,000.
