2016 Lexus RX FIRST LOOK
2016 Lexus RX FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
It’s the best-selling model in the brand’s 26-year history and is one of the originators of the luxury crossover segment. And now the time has come to transform the traditionally conservative RX into a modern, cutting edge Lexus. The all-new 2016 model brings the bold with Lexus’s signature spindle grill, LED lighting, a floating roofline design and available 20” wheels with customizable inserts.
A new F SPORT model moves the needle even further and is available for the first time on both RX engine offerings as long as all-wheel drive is specified. The RX 350 receives an upgraded 3.5-liter V6 while this RX 450h combines a hybrid-friendly version of that motor with an electric motor generator to equal output of around 300 horsepower. Both have been tuned for high fuel economy ratings and low carbon emissions. Enhanced handling and straight-line stability come courtesy of a stiffer body structure and Adaptive Variable Suspension is available for the first time, monitoring and adapting the shock absorber damping and steering, designed to produce less body lean for a more engaging driving experience.
A specially designed Michelin tire has expanding rain grooves that widen over time and emerging grooves which open as the tire wears. Inside, more rear-seat leg and knee space, new 60/40 power folding heated rear seats, an available dual screen rear entertainment system and a power panorama moonroof greet passengers. And the newly named Lexus safety System + invites a host of radar and camera-based features designed to avoid or mitigate collisions across a host of vehicle speeds and conditions plus there’s a color heads-up display for the driver.
