2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo FIRST LOOK
TESTDRIVENOW.COM PREVIEW: 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
Hyundai’s quirky but fun compact Veloster coupe offers a new limited run Rally Edition model for 2016. But if you can’t nab one of those 1,200 units, the Veloster Turbo receives significant enhancements to keep performance enthusiasts happy.
If you decide to forego the standard 6-speed manual transmission, a new 7-speed dual clutch automatic with paddle shifters is now optional, replacing the traditional 6-speed automatic. This gear box is tuned with a performance calibration and is engineered to handle the increased torque output of the turbocharged engine.
Speaking of which, this direct-injected 4-cylinder produces 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque on regular gas returning 27mpg city/33mpg highway with the auto. And with the Active Sound Design feature, there’re enhanced intake and exhaust sounds inside the cabin.
Other changes for 2016 include new Turbo-exclusive 18” wheels, sportier front seats with more aggressive bolstering, available orange-accented seat bolsters and interior accents, an electroluminescent gauge cluster and wider 18” tires. Lightweight with sport-tuned dynamics, the Veloster Turbo comes standard with Torque Vectoring Control and a quicker ratio steering rack for enthusiastic driving.
