2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen FIRST LOOK

A subtle name change and a new architecture underpin VW’s latest 5-door, the 2015 Golf Sportwagen.  Based on the new 7th generation Golf, this wagon rightfully loses its Jetta moniker and is bigger yet lighter and more powerful yet more fuel efficient.

2015_golf_sportwagen_4748Volkswagen says it’s for customers who want the versatility of a compact SUV but with a sportier driving experience.  It’s offered with two new powertrains; the 1.8-liter 170-horsepower turbo-4 paired with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed auto or for TDI lovers, a 150-horsepower 4-cylinder fitted with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic.  This Clean Diesel model achieves as much as 43mpg highway. And for even better news, the new TDI S model has a reduced base price by almost $2,000.  Choosing a wagon, there’s an expectation of big space and this car expands to 66.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the seats folded flat…significantly more than even the VW Tiguan.  New standard features include a 5.8” touchscreen infotainment center, Bluetooth with smartphone integration and satellite radio while new optional equipment includes Fender Premium Audio and auto climate control.  Pricing for the Golf Sportwagen 1.8 TSI starts at about $22,000 while TDI models begin at around $25,000.
