2016 Volvo S90 FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
Volvo’s long-awaited resurgence is now under way with a bevy of new product luring shoppers to discover their brand of unique Scandinavian luxury.
Replacing the S80 is Volvo’s new flagship – the first ever S90. Looking to stir up the traditionally conservative midsize segment, the S90 aims to set a new standard with superior materials, technology, comfort and class-leading semi-autonomous features.
Three engine choices are available – all with Volvo’s trademark Drive-E technology designed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions: the 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder gas engine known as the T6, a turbocharged version of that engine known as the T5, and the T8 – a plug-in hybrid version with standard all-wheel drive. An 8-speed automatic with start-stop technology is standard.
Some markets will offer a 6-speed manual transmission and diesel engine options. Volvo says the S90 takes a big step forward in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. Meanwhile, the interior utilizes the Sensus Connect touchscreen that debuted in the XC90, providing a clutter-free environment with minimal dashboard buttons.
The company says they have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.
