2016 MINI Convertible FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
Following on the heels of the brilliant, next-generation MINI Cooper Hardtop released in 2014 and the all-new 4-door variant in 2015 comes the fun-loving 2016 MINI Convertible, packed with all of the BMW Group goodness that has made the brand’s evolution so successful. Much like the new Clubman, MINI is elevating the premium factor of the convertible highlighted by a bespoke level of customization. It offers 11 exterior colors including the new Caribbean Aqua and a number of seating options including a new Malt Brown leather with diamond stitching. You can even specify a soft-top with an embroidered Union Jack.
Placing an emphasis on practicality, there’s an easy-load function that makes cargo space easily accessible and multi-way top settings, including a sunroof option, enabling the soft-top to open midway. And to flaunt your top-down prowess, the MINI Convertible is equipped with an “Always Open Timer” with the ability to calculate the number of hours you’ve driven with the wind in your hair. A 6.5” infotainment system is standard while an 8.8” screen with navigation and a clever rain warning app is optional.
The base Cooper model runs with BMW’s spunky TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder producing 162 pound-feet of torque mated to a 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic while Cooper S Convertibles pack a 2.0-liter turbo-4 producing 189 horsepower, allowing for the quickest 0-to-60mph time of 6.7-seconds when equipped with the auto.
