2016 MINI Clubman FIRST LOOK
2016 MINI Clubman FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
As the MINI brand evolves and expands its product offerings to show-off a more mature and refined side, it’ll be led by cars such as the all-new 2016 Clubman. For the first time in the Clubman’s 47 year history it has been developed as a separate model from the MINI Cooper Hardtop with an advancement in premium quality and craftsmanship.
Moving into a larger class of compact vehicle, the Clubman is longer and wider with particular attention given to the comfort of rear-seat passengers while cargo room can be significantly expanded by fold-flat rear seats. An optional foot-activated sensor allows the split-rear doors to open even when one’s hands are full. Continuing in the tradition of a British estate car, the Clubman reaches for a bespoke level of customization with exclusive new upholsteries including one inspired by a classic English Chesterfield sofa. Its new level of sophistication can be experienced from each of the 5 seats, complimented by a host of available options in the MINI tradition.
BMW supplies the power where the base Cooper Clubman model runs with a 3-cylinder turbo generating 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual while the sportier Cooper S trim has a 4-cylinder turbo capable of 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, mated to the brand’s first-ever 8-speed auto or a 6-speed manual. The Cooper S Clubman automatic can go from 0-to-60mph in 6.9-seconds.
