2018 BMW X2 First Look
2018 BMW X2 First Look by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
There’s a glaring hole in BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle lineup, but not for much longer. The undisputed champion of bodystyle offerings has readied an even numbered X model to make their SAV lineup complete.
Meet the 2018 BMW X2. Coming next spring, it’ll join its bigger brothers the X4 and X6 in the brand’s sportier, coupe-like styled class of utility vehicles. BMW says its design “combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of an X model.” About 3” shorter and 3” lower than an X1 yet with the same wheelbase, the X2 presents as more muscular.
The X2 xDrive28i will be available with the familiar 2.0-liter TwinScroll turbo-4 developing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, capable of a 0-to-60mph time of 6.3 seconds. An 8-speed automatic transmission is the sole gearbox. When equipped with the optional M Sport X package, the transmission is programmed for faster upshifts and downshifts and includes paddle shifters.
The all-wheel drive system distributes power between the front and rear axle as required and enhances cornering dynamics in all weather and road conditions. The X2 is distinguished by an improved chassis with revised tuning for increased agility.
The Driving Dynamics Control switch allows drivers to choose between Comfort, ECO PRO and Sport. When fitted with the optional M Sport Suspension with Dynamic Damper Control, the ride height is lowered by nearly a half an inch and allows for the suspension to be adjusted more precisely. 18”, 19” and 20” wheels are available.
The interior is finished in faux leather as standard with real leather as an option and includes a trunk with over 50 cubic feet of capacity for everyday practicality.
The instrument panel and Info Display with Black Panel Technology provide the driver with a clearly-arranged overview of important information. The X2 uses the optional touch functionality and the optional Head-Up Display to imbue a premium feel.
A panoramic roof is also optional. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
