2016 Mazda CX-9 FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes

Since 2006, Mazda’s 3-row crossover has been one of the most solid entries in what was then a burgeoning segment.  Now, nearly every carmaker offers at least one and the competition is fierce.  So this all-new, 2nd generation CX-9 has got to hit the ground running, and from the looks of it, Mazda has positioned it for success.  The Japanese automaker hangs its hat on provocative styling and engaging driving dynamics and the 2016 CX-9 showcases the latest expression of the brand’s Soul of Motion design language powered by a new small displacement turbocharged engine.

2016 Mazda CX-9Mazda has crafted their largest crossover to be as nice to look at and sit in as it is to drive.  The cabin displays a renewed attention to detail with material choices such as rosewood trim, supplied from a premium guitar maker.  Taking a page from Nissan’s playbook, one 2nd row seat can be folded forward while still accommodating a child seat and third row access has been developed so that even children can use them.

With space for 7, the CX-9 aims to be a family vehicle and yet a couples retreat with a blend of clever use of space and uptown sophistication.  Trimmer and quieter with greater refinement, the CX-9 is offered with 1 engine; a trick 2.5-liter SKYACTIV turbo, producing 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque on 93 octane.  Regular unleaded is permitted with reduced performance.

It’s estimated that efficiency has increased by 20%.   The available i-ACTIV AWD system receives input from 27 different sensors to predictively direct torque to the rear wheels as necessary.  Mazda sticks with its proven 6-speed auto. Technology doesn’t take a back seat, with an up to 8” MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system standing front and center.
