2016 Kia Optima Hybrid FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes

While the all-new 2016 Kia Optima offers the choice of 3 gas engines including an Eco model, the Optima Hybrid continues to live on the previous generation platform and comes available in 2 trims; Hybrid and Hybrid EX. Rated at 36mpg city/40mpg highway and 38mpg combined, this gas-electric hybrid is the most fuel efficient model in the entire 2016 Optima lineup.

It achieves this distinction by pairing a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with a 47-horsepower electric motor fed by a lithium polymer battery.  The combined 199 horsepower is delivered through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Different than the standard Optima, the Hybrid features unique exterior elements that enhance aerodynamics, rides atop low rolling resistance tires and makes extensive use of aluminum to offset the weight of the battery.  Though both models are equipped with a vast amount of standard features, shoppers can add the Convenience package to the base model adding the UVO infotainment system, back-up cam, a power driver’s seat and cosmetic LED lighting.

The EX trim is available with the Technology Package inviting a number of advanced safety features while a White Interior Package gives the cabin an upscale appearance with white leather seats offset by black, high-gloss trim.  Pricing starts at $26,820 while a fully loaded Optima Hybrid EX tallies $36,095.
