2016 BMW 3 Series Sedan FIRST LOOK by Auto Critic Steve Hammes
It’s always big news when BMW tinkers with the brand’s most successful model line and for 2016 the new 3 Series receives a range of enhancements highlighting dynamics. According to BMW, the chassis has been significantly improved encompassing new front struts, new rear damper technology and redesigned electric power steering to enhance overall vehicle dynamics.
Additionally, the 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon feature a sharper design and a sportier front incorporating newly designed headlights with optional full-LED headlights. LED tail lights define the rear. This “lifecycle” freshening – the first since the current model arrived in 2011 – also brings a new 340i model into the mix. It’s now the range topping non-M sedan model priced from $46,795 and is the first to receive the all-new, more powerful, 6-cylinder engine known internally as B58. It replaces the 335i as top dog, producing 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. When equipped with the updated, more efficient 8-speed automatic and optional all-wheel drive, it can sprint from 0-to-60mph in just 4.6 seconds. A rev matching 6-speed manual is available as a no-cost option on 320i, 328i, 340i and 340i xDrive models.
The new Track Handling Package, designed for driving enthusiasts, consists of Variable Sport Steering, Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Brakes and is available on all but the diesel models. Additionally, the content of the previous Sport Line is now standard on 328i, 328d and 340i models. Luxury and M Sport packages continue. Later in 2016 will be the new 330e Plug-in Hybrid. Pricing for the 320i with a 180 horsepower 4-cylinder turbo starts at $34,145. 328i models receive a 240 horsepower version of that engine.
