2014 Cadillac ELR – First Look:
Akin to its technological cousin the Chevy Volt, the all-new 2014 Cadillac ELR is an extended range electric vehicle. This means it’s propelled by electricity but also includes a gasoline engine acting as an electric generator to facilitate travel beyond the typical EV, up to 340 miles in total. When operating exclusively from battery power, the ELR is capable of a 37 mile range. Total system output from the 1.4-liter engine and 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is 217 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Fully charging the ELR’s battery can be accomplished in about 5 hours via a 240V charging station. In its EV mode, the ELR is rated at 82 MPGe on premium fuel though the majority of commuters can drive to and from work without using any gasoline. The battery is covered by an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty. Being a Cadillac, the ELR elevates the driving experience utilizing advanced chassis and suspension systems, 20” wheels and 4 selectable driving modes including sport. Acceleration for this 4050 pound coupe requires 7.8-seconds to reach 60mph. The ELR is a front-drive luxury subcompact with a 2 + 2 seating configuration and features the integral CUE with Navigation system, displaying energy usage and charging options. Pricing starts at $75,995 and tops out at over $83,000 fully loaded.
