2018 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE FIRST LOOK

2018 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE FIRST LOOK  BY AUTO CRITIC STEVE HAMMES

The American muscle car scene is back in full force with a continuous march of new entries and unprecedented levels of horsepower. Only this time around, the cars are about more than just ¼ mile times.

Take this new 2018 Camaro ZL1, for example.  Fitted with the track-focused 1LE package available throughout the Camaro lineup, Chevy says this car is the ultimate track-day Camaro.

This 1LE performance grouping goes well beyond the other offerings by incorporating a racing-based suspension, aero technologies and exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tires.  When compared with the standard ZL1 Coupe, this car knocks 3 seconds off of the lap time at GM’s Milford Road Course test track.

The improved performance is courtesy of 4 key elements: aerodynamics, adjustable suspension, wheels and tires and lighter weight.  A carbon fiber rear wing, an adaptable suspension with adjustable camber plates and rear stabilizer bar – all designed for quick changes at the track, new lightweight, wider yet smaller diameter wheels with tires developed specifically for this 1LE, designed to warm up faster and deliver max lateral grip over 1.0g, and a 60-pound lower curb weight elevate this car to the pinnacle of Camaro performance.

Power is supplied by a 650 horse supercharged V8 and a 6-speed manual with Active Rev Match.  Brembo brakes are also included.

Going on sale later this year, pricing will be announced closer to its arrival.
