Dealing with Car Emergencies
Hi, I’m Steve Hammes from DriveTime. Being prepared to deal with car emergencies is essential if you’re going to be safe on the road.
If you suffer a tire blowout, take your foot off the gas. The car will pull in the direction of the flat, so steer carefully. Gently apply brakes and slow down gradually. If you can’t safely change the blowout, call for help.
If your brakes fail, pump them to make use of residual pressure left in the system. Shift into a lower gear to use engine braking. Lift the emergency hand brake with the button pressed to prevent wheel lock up. If necessary, sideswipe a guardrail to slow the vehicle. Once you stop, call for a tow.
After fording deep water, if brakes pull or do not hold, dry them by driving slowly while applying the brakes.
During a mechanical breakdown, turn on hazard lights while pulling safely off the road. Deploy flares, lights or triangles and raise your car’s hood.
