Accidents 10 Point Checklist
Hi, I’m Steve Hammes from DriveTime. Nobody plans to have accidents, but having an accident plan can help drivers know what to do if they are involved in an accident.
Here is a 10-Point Checklist to follow in the event of an accident.
- If an accident occurs, stop your vehicle as soon as possible. Never leave the scene of an accident.
- Move the car to the side of the road if it is safe and legal to do so in your state before the police arrive.
- If the car is out of traffic, staying in the car is the safest option.
- Determine whether you or any passengers have been injured.
- Call the police or 911.
- Exchange insurance information with the other driver.
- Gather photographs and details of the cars involved. Try to obtain contact information from witnesses.
- Truthfully answer questions from law enforcement to the best of your ability.
- Write a detailed an account of the events of the accident as soon as possible.
- Even if you do not intend to file a claim, you should contact your insurance company to discuss and report the accident.
