Distracting Drivers: Is New Technology Keeping Eyes On The Road?
By Paul Crosby, TestDriveNow.com
Today’s drivers are more pressed for time than ever before and find themselves multitasking in order to get more done in less time. Unfortunately, most of this multitasking gets done behind the wheel of an automobile traveling 70 mph. The explosion of smartphone technology has definitely played a huge role in the number of accidents caused while distracting drivers. Autos have become so advanced with their audio, navigation, entertainment and climate control systems that the view from the driver’s seat is closer to an aircraft than a car with dozens of gauges, displays, buttons and switches all competing for the driver’s attention.
Bluetooth. In an effort to help drivers maintain focus on the road, auto manufacturers are incorporating a number of fantastic new features. Most autos built in the past five years are available with some type of Bluetooth capability. This allows drivers to link their cell phones with their car for hands free operation. Several manufacturers offer a button on the steering wheel to answer and end calls, keeping the driver’s hands on the wheel. One new feature offered through Bluetooth connections converts text messages to voice messages. This will hopefully allow drivers to hear their important inbound messages without the extremely dangerous practice of texting while driving. These types of text conversion systems could potentially save countless lives.
Heads-up displays. Another great feature being offered on several new models is a heads-up display. These have been around for some time on higher end autos, and now these systems are starting to find their way into more reasonably priced cars and trucks. A heads-up display projects information onto the windshield in the driver’s line of sight. Info such as speed, fuel level, turn signals, RPMs and vehicle system warnings can all be displayed. By projecting the info onto the windshield, drivers do not spend as much time looking down at the dashboard to monitor the vehicle’s systems. The driver’s eyes stay focused on the road ahead, a huge safety benefit.
Steering wheel controls. Nearly all manufacturers offer their cars and trucks with audio controls on the steering wheel. There can be controls for volume, radio presets and buttons to toggle between the different audio modes (FM, AM, Satellite, CD, MP3, etc). The end result is that the driver’s hands stay on the wheel and their attention remains on the pavement in front of them.
Remember, no matter how many driver aids the auto manufacturers come up with, the ultimate responsibility of paying attention comes down to the operator. Keep your eyes on the road folks, that text message can wait until you get where you’re going!
